In 8ight: The Stepson Of Erykah Badu, Bernarr weaves his soulful step-moms and other artists lyrics with his own creations to create a beautifully textured tapestry. His personality seems to seep through your speakers as he belts out lows that make you tremble and highs that make your heart beat faster. Durand’s voice has a spirituality and a sexuality that reminds you of Prince as well as a smoothness and playfulness that is uniquely his own. Reminding us just how powerful and cool technology is coupled with know-how and drive , It should be noted that the entire project was recorded on his MacBook using GarageBand. The entire 8 song effort is well structured and ready to play in your car, while you clean, for your date, or while you create (like I am currently doing). Carry on living the same. just like before i entered your life. try to make your daily movements seems believable. like you haven’t been marked. as if you never encountered a being, a feeling, a light that touched your soul and your retina so that you never the saw the sky or the universe the same again. tell stories about me like i’m a myth or a fable. give me no name or give me many. so that you can forget and stop regretting. make new arrangements that don’t require me. i give you permission. it was not meant to last. it never is.

Carry on living the same. think of me often. in dreams, day and night. wonder what if. create lives, create lies with with me as your antithisis. make me the villian or the hero. remember me when you see color or hear natures hum. hold me like religion, close to your heart. hold me like science, know i am truth. love me and question me. laugh at jokes i tell across the world. smile when i smile and try to sooth your rumbling stomach when i cry. think me near. and i’ll come with you. take me in slowly or swallow me whole. either way digestion will be easy. our liaison will be lasting. but our lives are not linked.

I’ve always known what I’m about to say is true, and it’s nothing you’ve never heard before, but I am going to reiterate it here. You have to follow your dreams and be true to yourself. Theres nothing spectacular about that or eye-opening, and I haven’t put some new spin on it. I write this because I feel people need to hear this, read this, think this and say this as often as possible. I am increasingly shocked at just how easy it is to lose sight of the inner truth and unique desires that are individual to every one of us. As our identities are steadily molded by our outside environments and projected perceptions, we must constantly take stock of who we are and what we want, void of outside suggestion. We must choose freedom. We must choose honesty. We must choose to fly (or walk, or swim, or run, or skip, or roll, or jump) towards our best case life scenario.
